Gender 101

Together we learn about gender. Rather than a fixed quality, each person’s gender is a constellation of their various traits everything from the way they look to the things they do.

The gender constellation framework embraces all of the complexities of a person, recognizing that most people’s gender expression, sex, and gender identity do not fit into normative stereotypes or boxes, and different people emphasize different traits when thinking about gender. The constellation expands what traditional gender identities like “man” or “woman” can mean or look like; since everyone’s constellation looks different and can change over time, it shows that there is no one way to “be a man” or “be a woman.” And the gender constellation allows for gender identities that do not fall into the strict gender binary, too, making it more inclusive for all people. Gender 101 is an interactive workshop that aims to build awareness of the diversity of gender identities on campus. Through presentation and discussion, we hope to build the capacity of individuals to recognize and respect all genders and provide tools and ideas for organizations to create a more welcoming and inclusive environment.

Fantastic lecture. Brilliantly presented. Made me really reflective of this issue and passionate to take it back to Australia.

I really enjoyed the interactive parts of the presentation!  I also appreciated the time at the end to discuss HLS administrative matters.
